Environmental Responsibility

Our responsibility for the environment has a high priority. We have defined four key areas in which we want to make continuous improvements:

  • CO2 reduction and energy efficiency
  • Resource management
  • Environmental management System
  • Water

Examples of what we have achieved so far

    Reducing climate impact

By 2020 we aim to reduce our CO2 emissions by 30% compared to 2005. To date (2012) we have already achieved two-thirds of this target. Our EU-wide CO2 reduction programme covers all sites and logistics and we continuously work towards achieving our objective. Carbon footprints for all major product groups will be available by the end of 2013.

    Environmental management systems

Implement Energy Mangement systems in all factories by the end of 2013. Role out agro yield management system for potatoes and peanuts by the end of 2020.

We are currently running a pilot project with some of our contract farmers in Germany and some of our Argentinean nut farmers to reduce water consumption, energy consumption and use of agro chemicals  in our potato and nut production. In this project, which is backed by university-led scientific research, we hope to gain insights that will help us to even further improve the sustainability of our potato and nut cultivation.

    Resource Management

Reduce waste (edible waste 20% by 2015 versus 2010 and unedible waste 10% by 2015 versus 2010) per category. Reduce water consumption (-20% per 1000t by 2015 versus 2010) for crisps. Reduce packaging material and increase recycled content. A defined metrics is in all sites available.

    Our plans for the future

    • By 2015 we aim to reduce food waste in our production by 20% compared to 2010 and non-food waste by 10%
    • By 2015 we will have reduced our water consumption by 20% compared to 2010
    • Certification of all our factories according to the energy efficiency norm ISO 50001
