Environmental Responsibility
Our responsibility for the environment has a high priority. We have defined four key areas in which we want to make continuous improvements:
- CO2 reduction and energy efficiency
- Resource management
- Environmentally-friendly raw material sourcing
- Environmental management systems
Examples of what we have achieved so far

Reducing climate impact
By 2020 we aim to reduce our CO2 emissions by 30% compared to 2005. To date (2012) we have already achieved two-thirds of this target. Our EU-wide CO2 reduction programme covers all sites and logistics and we continuously work towards achieving our objective.

Palm oil and rainforest protection
Wherever we use palm oil in our products, we use only RSPO certified palm oil. It supports plantations that have been successfully audited in accordance with the provisions of the “Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO). As a member of the RSPO, Intersnack is only using palmoil according to the Book and Claim* system.

Sustainability in potato and nut production
We are currently running a pilot project with some of our contract farmers in Germany and some of our Argentinean nut farmers to reduce water consumption, energy consumption and use of agro chemicals in our potato and nut production. In this project, which is backed by university-led scientific research, we hope to gain insights that will help us to even further improve the sustainability of our potato and nut cultivation.
Our plans for the future

- By 2015 we aim to reduce food waste in our production by 20% compared to 2010 and non-food waste by 10%
- By 2015 we will have reduced our water consumption by 20% compared to 2010
- Continue and extend our involvement in the use of sustainable palm oil
- Certification of all our factories according to the energy efficiency norm ISO 50001
*Book and Claim system
Certified plantations are invited to register quantities of palm oil produced in accordance with specified methods. Certification credits are issued in proportion to the amount registered. The certification credits are purchased by users of palm oil to cover the producer's cost of maintaining the certification and to supply funds for RSPO activities.
